From record-breaking theatrical releases to massive data centers, this episode dives into how emerging technology is reshaping both digital creation and real-world experiences. The central theme revolves around the unexpected physical consequences of the tech boom, highlighting everything from AI micro-drones that actively hunt mosquitoes to the evolving luxury of app-driven cinema seating. The hosts also emphasize the backend of this innovation, noting that while software capabilities are expanding rapidly with tools like Nvidia's motion capture, the physical hardware supply chain is struggling to keep up.

The crew offer a grounded perspective on these trends, blending enthusiasm for new creative workflows with healthy skepticism about rising consumer costs. While the hosts are intrigued by the accessibility of AI tools like Lyria 3.5 for music generation and the unique form factor of the Samsung Galaxy Fold 8, they acknowledge the frustrating reality of impending hardware limitations. Their final outlook suggests that while software will continue to democratize tasks like 3D animation, the physical tech industry is heading toward a severe resource bottleneck that could dramatically impact the availability and price of consumer electronics and gaming consoles.

Key Topics

Spider-Man Shatters Box Office Records: The newest Spider-Man film has officially claimed the title of the biggest opening weekend in box office history, pulling in a staggering $360 million and surpassing the previous record held by Avengers: Endgame. This massive cultural event sparked a debate between the hosts regarding the modern theater experience, contrasting traditional chaotic general seating with the luxury of reserved recliners and dine-in services. The discussion highlights how premium, app-driven amenities are becoming essential for audiences willing to brave opening-weekend crowds.

The Rise of Mosquito-Hunting Drones: A tech company called Tornial has developed tiny, nimble drones that use ultrasonic sonar and AI to locate and eliminate mosquitoes. Instead of using fire or chemicals, these micro-drones physically intercept the insects, using their propellers to grind them up safely and quietly. This represents a highly effective, albeit slightly terrifying, application of AI and robotics to solve a major global health nuisance.

Democratizing 3D Animation: Creating 3D motion is becoming significantly easier thanks to new open-source tools from Nvidia that allow creators to generate human movement simply by prompting an AI with text directions. Additionally, the hosts discussed a clever mesh-patching technique that achieves a claymation-style mouth animation by blending a pre-made mouth patch directly onto a 3D head model. These workflows completely bypass traditional, labor-intensive rigging processes, making advanced video game animation accessible to solo developers without specialized software.

The Looming RAM Apocalypse: The explosive growth of artificial intelligence is putting immense strain on hardware manufacturing, specifically the global supply of RAM. Data centers require vastly more memory than consumer electronics, leading suppliers to prioritize enterprise AI infrastructure over console manufacturers like PlayStation and Xbox. This resource competition is actively driving up costs and slowing the development of next-generation hardware, potentially leading to a severe consumer supply bottleneck by the end of the decade.

Before recording, Jeff got really mad, like nerd mad -

Jeff Kidd
He gets mad

Dave Ghidiu
...because, because the remote changed on, on the drones, and you're like, "Oh, I'm so mad."

Jeff Kidd
I am mad about that.

Dave Ghidiu
The remote.

Jeff Kidd
That's a nice...I don't even remember what we paid for it, but we-

Dave Ghidiu
Oh, they changed the remote

Jeff Kidd
...the remote for the drone, like this is a nice remote. And then they don't support it anymore, I gotta buy another one.

Dave Ghidiu
Oh, man.

Jeff Kidd
I do- I-

Paul Engin
I need me a remote

Jeff Kidd
...it's a ni- it's solid, it's a nice solid remote. It's a good r- big - ...it is, by the way, audience - ...if this, if he puts this in there, this isn't like a little TV remote. This is a big remote.

Paul Engin
But now it's smaller.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah, they made it smaller -

Dave Ghidiu
Oh

Jeff Kidd
...and lighter, and it's got more features.

Dave Ghidiu
Oh, man.Life is hard, man.

Paul Engin
Welcome to the Immersive Lens, the podcast exploring technologies reshaping how we live, work, and learn.

Dave Ghidiu
From AI and virtual reality to creative media and design, we are diving into the tools and ideas shaping our connected world.

Paul Engin
My name is Paul Engen.Join us as we uncover the people and ideas driving the next wave of interactive experiences.

Dave Ghidiu
And I'm Dave Gadou. This is the Immersive Lens.

Paul Engin
And we are joined yet again-

Dave Ghidiu
Yes

Paul Engin
...by the amazing, one and only, Jeff Kidd.

Jeff Kidd
I'm back.

Dave Ghidiu
Woo.

Jeff Kidd
Headlines.Lots of headlines.

Paul Engin
Lots of headlines. And, you know, since we're releasing these so quickly, we can do these because, uh, you won't hear 'em a few weeks later.

Jeff Kidd
That's right.That's right.

Paul Engin
So, um, why don't we g- go on with hot takes.Jeff, do you wanna start off?Do you had something happen with your iOS or something?

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.I don't know what, if it was related to me running the beta of iOS 27.I still am.I, I'm staying.Um-

Paul Engin
You're committing to that-

Jeff Kidd
I've committed to, I've commit, I've committed. You know, I actually had a thought the other day, it's because my phone's, the speaker, I'm having trouble hearing out of the ear speaker, and I'm like, "Oh, maybe, oh, what do I do?" I can't even buy a new phone even if I wanted to because it's running 26.I wouldn't be able to back up -

Paul Engin
Oh

Jeff Kidd
...connect it to back up -

Paul Engin
Until-

Jeff Kidd
...restore from the r- from this phone because the, until, until-

Paul Engin
Full release

Jeff Kidd
... it releases. So I gotta, I can't do anything with it.

Anyway, so the part of, part, one of the neat features that Dave and I kinda talked about a little bit is the advanced parental features, um, settings for i- in iOS 27, so I'm running that, and then my son turned 13. He turned 13 this weekend.

Paul Engin
Happy birthday.

Jeff Kidd
Yay. And we were just kinda sitting at the dining room table last night, and he was a- he's like, "Can you..." He's trying to get my permission to add contacts. And I'm like, "Don't you have this contact in there already?" And he goes, "Yeah." And I'm like, "But why are you adding it again?" And he goes, "I don't know, it wants me to add him again." And it was, it wanted my permission, and I was getting the notification, and I was clicking okay, but then there was an error. And I was like, "Why is there an error? I'm, I'm, I'm right here." And I went into my settings for, in iOS for the parental settings, I hadn't turned them on, 'cause you have to. You have to opt in for it, right?

Paul Engin
Right.

Jeff Kidd
It's not gonna automatically do it.

Paul Engin
Right.

Jeff Kidd
I'm like, oh, so I have to turn this on so he can add his contacts, and the procedure's slightly different. I can actually do it on my end, but for some reason, his iPad wasn't talking to my phone. Like, it wasn't sending me the notifications.

Paul Engin
Okay.

Jeff Kidd
He was like, "Okay, ask for permission." I wasn't getting, I wasn't getting the notification.

Paul Engin
Notification.

Jeff Kidd
And I was trying to tap it on his iPad.It was like, "Error. Can't do it.Can't do it." And I was like, maybe it's the iOS, maybe it's the difference.I'm in a beta?I don't know. That was a weird fluke.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah, so I have experienced, especially with Apple, like these weird edge cases that most people don't experience.

Jeff Kidd
And I could, I couldn't find it.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah. I, I had a similar one when I was trying to log onto a Mac, and I'd had previously like a phone. It was like, okay, just check the s- code we sent to your other device, and I haven't had an iPhone in like 10 years, and I was like, oh, this is like an edge case 'cause most people who have a Mac probably have a phone.

Paul Engin
Right.

Dave Ghidiu
So yeah, I think those flaws, but they usually get those hammered out.

Jeff Kidd
And, and, and what I ended up doing was, 'cause it's built into the iOS 27, I just did it myself. I just was, went into his, I activated that feature, and I could go into his phone, and I, oh, you wanna add a contact?

So I added it.

Paul Engin
Parental or whatever.

Jeff Kidd
Added the name.Yeah, yeah, yeah, and I just did it from my end.But it was just like, oh, that's weird. So that was my hot take.

Paul Engin
Yeah, I've had that happen even with the family share, like they've been trying to get permission, and they're saying like, "Oh, I'm doing the..." But sometimes I'm like, "Are you?"

Jeff Kidd
Mm.

Paul Engin
"Are you?Wait a minute."

Jeff Kidd
The fact that he was sh- it was like, it was live in front of me - ... I was like, okay, this is a weird, this is a weird thing. Maybe it's because, is it because I'm on 27, a beta, and he's on iPad 26? Like there, there's some weird mismatched communication happening here.

Paul Engin
Gotcha.

Jeff Kidd
I don't know.

Paul Engin
How about you, Dave? What's going on?

Dave Ghidiu
Okay, this is really, really cool. Uh, one, I'm reading this series of books, it's fantasy about dragons. It's called Fourth Wing. It's got some spicy parts in it, but generally speaking, like I really like it.

It's like just this world of mus- like magic and dragons. It's, and it takes place at a war college for dragons. So at any rate, the, I, I like, they have these magnificent battles where dragons are flying and fighting other dragons, and as I'm reading this book then, I encounter this company called, I, I think it's pronounced like Tornial, and they have these drones that are really, really small and super nimble and super quiet, and they can just fly like really, really fast, so it remind me of a dragon. But they defend against mosquitoes, and they don't breathe fire or anything, but they like w- using ultrasonic sonar and like AI, they find the mosquitoes, and they run over them in such a way that the propellers grind up the mosquitoes.

Jeff Kidd
Mm-hmm.I've seen this, actually.

Dave Ghidiu
What?

Jeff Kidd
It spins really f- and it spins fast enough where it's really quiet, right?

Dave Ghidiu
Y- yeah, it's supposed to be like super quiet.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
It's, it's wild.If you go to the website, if you go to-

Jeff Kidd
Yeah, I'm on the website, yeah

Dave Ghidiu
... yeah, theimmersivelens.com, then you can see it, and it's just, which, like yeah, I get it, like mosquitoes are annoying. Do we really need this?

But when you think that mosquitoes are like the number one killer of like human beings across the c- the world with like malaria and stuff, I'm like, this might have some... This is way more effective than any other mosquito intervention we have right now.

Paul Engin
That was the big Panama Canal, right? That was the everyone dying because of the mosquito.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
Yeah.Um, that's crazy.I've- How does it, how does it find?Is it, is it the buzz?Like how does it-

Dave Ghidiu
It's a signature, yeah.So they, they can z- 'cause you, you, we can all hear the, the, the z.

Paul Engin
The z, yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah. So like, it ha- it's kinda like that app, um, Merlin for birds except for mosquitoes.

And, uh, and it has like crash to turn. It won't, like, hurt humans or animals or pets or anything like that, but they just, like, zero in on these mosquitoes and just dispatch them much like a dragon would.

Paul Engin
Oh my gosh.So good thing you were watching, uh, the Dragon movie.

Dave Ghidiu
Reading.

Paul Engin
Or reading the Dragon movie.

Dave Ghidiu
Uh, they're making an TV series in the fall.

Paul Engin
Uh, is, is it, uh-

Dave Ghidiu
Or maybe next year.

Paul Engin
What's, what's the title?

Dave Ghidiu
The Fourth Wing.

Paul Engin
The Fourth Wing?

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
Okay.

Dave Ghidiu
If, if you...Like, if you grew up like I did with Harry Potter and you're like, "I love the world magic"-

Paul Engin
Yeah

Dave Ghidiu
...but you want something that's, like, a, a little bit more morbid and, and, like, more adult, it's, like, it's just scary and-

Paul Engin
Not Game of Thrones?That's not...

Dave Ghidiu
Eh.It's, it's got, like, shares some DNA.

Paul Engin
Yeah, okay. All right. All right. Um, so when we got here, um, on the podcast, um, I had a incident where, um, someone left me a note. And, uh, Jeff, you didn't, you weren't here f- when we were discussing this, um, but left me a note, and I, I walked into my office, I opened it, and it was from a student, and it was just saying, "Thank you. I appreciate it," blah, blah. So it was very sweet.

I literally open up my phone, and it's a picture of him and I on my phone-

Speaker 4
Okay

Paul Engin
...from, from graduation.

Speaker 4
Okay.

Dave Ghidiu
So, like, of all the students in the past that you've ever had-

Paul Engin
Of, of, yeah

Dave Ghidiu
...and all the photos that you own.

Paul Engin
All the photos I own. And, and I've, I took a bunch of graduation pictures with-

Speaker 4
Sure

Paul Engin
...a bunch of students, and it was his.And so then I was like, Dave and I were talking, and we're, we're, we're wondering...I didn't verbalize it.I read it.

Speaker 4
Right.

Paul Engin
So then it was the conspiracy of, um, vaccines, uh, tracking-

Dave Ghidiu
The microchips in your brain.

Speaker 4
Yep, yep.Nanobots.

Paul Engin
Nanobots. Uh, so through... So it's either the nanobots went through my veins, went through my mind, and then from my mind, uh, th- through Wi-Fi mind, uh, magic, went on my phone.

Or a more logical explanation would be-

Dave Ghidiu
Oh, I'd like to hear it.

Paul Engin
Oh.

Speaker 4
Can't wait for this

Paul Engin
...the location of the student was here, and it detected that-

Speaker 4
Okay

Paul Engin
...he was just in the area. And so it built that correlation of you took a photo right in f- 'cause it was-

Speaker 4
Mm-hmm

Paul Engin
...the photo was from my office.

Speaker 4
Mm.

Paul Engin
And so I was there, he was there. And so when I open up my phone, I have a...It just randomly displays.

Speaker 4
Yes.

Paul Engin
I don't know if you-

Speaker 4
Oh, yeah.Yeah

Paul Engin
...have that, like, the photos just randomly display.

Speaker 4
Yes.

Paul Engin
On the iPhone, anyway, you have that.Android ASIMSO.

Speaker 4
Yeah, we have that too, Paul.

Paul Engin
Okay.I just- You know, I don't know.I don't know.

Speaker 4
We had it before we ever did that.

Paul Engin
Um, I assume Androids have cameras and, like, uh, you know-

Dave Ghidiu
Yes, they got cameras on the phones, and they can make calls too.Next, next year they're gonna put a speaker on it too.Uh-huh.

Paul Engin
There you go.

Speaker 4
Wow.

Paul Engin
No, I'm only busting chops. Androids are awesome.

But, um, it was just interesting because then I realized, I wonder if a lot of people associate the, um, like, it's listening with something more practical, like it's just based on location, or, like, you go to a pet store and you don't say anything, but then all of a sudden you get all, all the pet stuff.

Speaker 4
Mm-hmm.Oh, sure.Sure.

Paul Engin
Or, um, I think Hugh was saying, like, all of a sudden he started getting dog food recommendations and stuff.

Speaker 4
He doesn't even have a dog.

Paul Engin
And he doesn't have a dog.And it's, you know, Dave and I have dogs, and I, you, it could just be-

Speaker 4
Mm-hmm

Paul Engin
...he has us as a contact and the location of-

Speaker 4
Yep

Paul Engin
...so it's like-

Dave Ghidiu
They can see that

Paul Engin
...oh, this is an- another dog person or something.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah, and it, it is, like, it's nice to know that maybe it's not the microchip Wi-Fi nanobots in your body. But it is, like-

Paul Engin
I, I mean, it still could be.We don't know.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah, but is that-

Speaker 4
You don't know

Dave Ghidiu
...is that any worse than all these companies that have, like, billions and billions of data points about, like, including our location, that are able to-

Paul Engin
Right

Dave Ghidiu
...like, serve things and connect people?Um, which is really, uh, I don't know.

Paul Engin
That is, it is crazy.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
It is crazy. Um, and I have one more thing.

This is kinda geeky, and, and so if I get too technical, we'll stop talking about this- ... because maybe this is, um... So I like doing 3D, and usually when you do a 3D model of a head, you, you model the mouth. So picture, like, a model of a mouth, and then you open the mouth, and then you put teeth in, and, and-

Dave Ghidiu
Do you do, like, musculature so you can have the mouth open in different ways?

Paul Engin
Right.

Dave Ghidiu
Okay.

Paul Engin
Right. And so there was this other technique that had the mesh completely... There was nothing there. And I was like, "How do they do this?" And it was just so s- uh, like, I think to myself, "This is, this is a really cool approach." So what they did is, um, they just created a, a mouth patch.Um, so if you picture just, like, a, a ellipse and then, like, a hole in the ellipse, and then what you do is you project a, uh, circle where the mouth would be, and it creates a hole in the 3D model, and then you just plop this onto it and blend it to the head. And I was like, "Oh, my...Are you kidding?" So this was, I experimented with this this, this weekend, and, uh, I was like, "This is really cool." So it gave a cool clay effect to the mouth animation, um, from a hole in the, um...L- like, it just, uh, I'm, I, I'm trying to stop it on my, um...But it, it just, it was a cool approach to 3D modeling, and I, I guess I'll, I'll stop there, but, um, versus fully modeling the face, you're just modeling that patch.

Dave Ghidiu
And for those of you who are not in the room with Jeff and I right now looking over Paul's shoulder, again, this is, like, another thing that you are saying is, like, sweet and innocent, but it's the most terrifying thing I've ever seen in my life.

Like, when you see this, like, wire mesh.

Speaker 4
Well, I'm looking at it, and it's like, so i- it's not animating, like, face muscles.Like, no muscles. It's just lips, basically.

Dave Ghidiu
So if I was like to, if you wanted to really animate someone's, articulate their facial expressions, it's not gonna do that. But it's simple, simple basic animation, right?

Paul Engin
Yeah, it makes it look like claymation.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
Like, like it- that's essentially what it is.It's not a real mouth, it's like a claymation mouth.Um-

Dave Ghidiu
So terrifying.

Jeff Kidd
This is nightmare fuel right here.

Dave Ghidiu
That's cool.See, that was cool.

Paul Engin
That's, that's...And that's what I...Like, I was like, that's really, like, a cool approach.It was just a-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah

Paul Engin
...different approach.

Dave Ghidiu
Mm-hmm.

Paul Engin
And sometimes you're so, like, you have to model the whole thing. You don't think about these alternative techniques or methods. That's what I was, like, really enamored by.

Dave Ghidiu
And it's something that you wouldn't have to be an animator to do necessarily, right?

Paul Engin
You, I mean-

Dave Ghidiu
It's like vibe coding for coding. It, it's kinda like I'm trying to connect the dots-

Paul Engin
Yes

Dave Ghidiu
...a little bit. It's like I don't know how to code, but I could vibe code.I can't animate, but could I do that?

Paul Engin
This would make it a lot easier to animate.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
Someone would have to set this up.

Dave Ghidiu
Right.

Paul Engin
But once it's set up, I could give it to one of you guys, and it's literally, like, four points, and it's tight. Like, you basically constrain it to the mesh of the face, so it never leaves the face. So you could, like, move it around, and it will move on the, um, the contours of the face.

Dave Ghidiu
Mm-hmm.

Paul Engin
So, um, all right.I'm, I'm done geeking out.Half the pe- I lost probably half the audience on that, but-

Jeff Kidd
I, I, I do appreciate, like-

Paul Engin
No, I don't.I, I-

Jeff Kidd
It took me a minute to visualize what you were saying, and, and that video helped.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
I do appreciate...And then we'll put a link to that video if you put a link in the show notes.

Paul Engin
Okay.Yeah, yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
We'll put a link to that video so you can see this nightmare fuel stuff. But I do, I do appreciate when, like, an industry is, has been around for a while, and then someone comes up with, like, a nice, easy, innovative s- solution to a, to a problem. So I, I appreciate that.

All right. We sh- we should dive in. And just as a reminder, folks, when we do headlines, I start the timer, if I remember, for two minutes. And-

Jeff Kidd
It was Paul's idea.It was Paul's idea.

Dave Ghidiu
Paul's idea. And immediately was like, "Can we go past the two minutes?"

Paul Engin
Okay.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
All right. So Jeff, do you wanna kick us off?

Jeff Kidd
First headline, Spider-Man.

Dave Ghidiu
Um-

Jeff Kidd
It was this weekend

Paul Engin
And just so you know, this one we're gonna do six minutes-

Jeff Kidd
See, he's, he interrupted-

Paul Engin
...'cause we're gonna already...

Jeff Kidd
Interrupted me already.

Paul Engin
Okay.Go ahead.Go ahead.Go ahead.

Dave Ghidiu
Gosh.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah, yeah. W- well, two minutes a piece 'cause we both, we, we all three of us got something to say. Spider-Man, opening weekend, this weekend, all three of us saw it. We will discuss.

But headline is Spider-Man: Brand New Day climbs to $360 million, biggest opening weekend box office in history.

Paul Engin
Is that since Endgame or-

Jeff Kidd
Endgame.Yeah, it b- it, it beat out its itself, basically.Marvel, uh, uh, beat out Endgame is, uh, Spider-Man.But Spider-Man's a bigger...Like, everyone knows Spider-Man.Everybody-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
I, w- when, when I went, did you guys, do, do, did you guys have to go to a place where you picked your seats ahead?

Dave Ghidiu
Oh, yeah.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
I didn't.We went to Cannes today where there was a line.

Dave Ghidiu
Oh, like old school.

Jeff Kidd
Old school.

Dave Ghidiu
Line out the chums.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
I, yeah, even though I had pre-ordered the tickets, it didn't, 'cause you don't, you know, that's not assigned seating.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
I had to wait in line.

Dave Ghidiu
I, I, that's like the Southwest model now, and it gives me anxiety now. I'm like, "Oh, I don't wanna get too close. I don't wanna be too far. I need an aisle seat 'cause I get up and pee all the time." Like- These are the things I think of.

Paul Engin
Wait-

Dave Ghidiu
I'm like, "What if there's not room for me and my friends?"

Paul Engin
So you're saying-

Jeff Kidd
The, the friends first

Paul Engin
...you, you like to assign the seats?

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah, now I do.

Jeff Kidd
I like that.I do agree. But it was, it was, 'cause I knew that.I knew that going in.I'm like, "Oh, we'll get there a couple minutes early. You know, 10 minute, 15 minutes early or whatever." It's just-

Dave Ghidiu
What are you, crazy?

Jeff Kidd
And I was-

Dave Ghidiu
On opening weekend?

Jeff Kidd
Well, it was just one of those things where I was just like, "Oh, it's, I already have the tickets, so-

Dave Ghidiu
Did you get good seats though?

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.Oh, yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
Okay.

Jeff Kidd
We got decent...Yeah, because we didn't get popcorn, you know, 'cause people was normally-

Paul Engin
You just went right in.

Jeff Kidd
We just went right in.And I was, "Oh, this is, half the theater's still available. We're, we're fine."

Dave Ghidiu
I'm getting anxiety just listening to this.

Jeff Kidd
No.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
It was fine.

Paul Engin
We ended up-

Jeff Kidd
It was fun.But it was actually kinda nice.It was like, you know-

Paul Engin
Exciting

Jeff Kidd
...you're just like, "Oh, look at all these people here. We're all here to see it."

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.I knew it.

Jeff Kidd
That never happens.I can't remember the last time I waited in line to see a movie. That was fun.

Paul Engin
Yeah.So I, you know, about this, I f- how cool is this?We have three different movie experiences with this one movie.

Jeff Kidd
That's true.

Paul Engin
So you did general audience.

Jeff Kidd
Yep.

Paul Engin
I did reserved seating, um-

Dave Ghidiu
Recliners

Paul Engin
...recliners.And what did you do?

Dave Ghidiu
I did the Apple Cinema experience. Uh, and that was, it's that you, you reserve it, and it's recliners, but they also have a table at each seat with a QR code, and you can use your app and order food and beverages, and they bring it out to you during the movie.

Paul Engin
So is it, so i- I'm-

Jeff Kidd
Have you done this?

Paul Engin
Is this like a restaurant?

Jeff Kidd
I've done it before.Have you done it before?

Paul Engin
I've never done it before.

Jeff Kidd
Okay, I've done it before.

Dave Ghidiu
It's like if you go to, say, the airport, almost every airport restaurant and n- now works where you like, you pull up the menu, you say, "I want this, this, and this," and they bring it out to you.

Because a QR code's interdependent or individual for each seat.

Paul Engin
But n- I guess what I'm saying, is it, i- is it like a restaurant setting?Like, is it tables? Is, or is it still like seating?

Dave Ghidiu
Oh, no.This particular one is like, y- you know like in the college classrooms where it has, like, the tray that comes over or an-

Paul Engin
Oh, yeah

Dave Ghidiu
...you know.It's, it's like that.

Jeff Kidd
So you're in your seat to watch the movie, and there's a s- a tray there-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah

Jeff Kidd
...for you to put your food down.

Paul Engin
Okay, so it's not...For some reason I was think- I was thinking, like, it's a bunch of tables and restaurants-

Jeff Kidd
No, no, but, um-

Paul Engin
...and you're eating, and you're just, like, looking up and watching.

Dave Ghidiu
The, the Alamo Drafthouse in New York City is similar to that where they have, like, a shared table between, like, two or three seats.

Paul Engin
Uh-huh.

Dave Ghidiu
Or at least, uh, m- maybe it wasn't Alamo. Maybe it was one that I went to that was similar to.

Um, so but I do like this model, a- and I think, like, this is the technology's changing. Everyone can rent movies and, you know, if you wait three weeks, you can watch Spider-Man. Well, maybe not Spider-Man, but, like, almost... Like, I watched Masters of the Universe this weekend, and that was in theaters, like, a month ago.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
So, like, now-

Paul Engin
I did too.

Dave Ghidiu
Uh, we can talk about that maybe in the next episode.

Paul Engin
Okay.Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
But the, the, the experience is worth the premium, the, the little bit more cost, but it's much more... Like, I, I won't go to a theater for a normal movie now, but I go for a cool movie like this, and I want the recliner, and I wanna pick my seat, and, like, oh yeah, their burgers are actually really good there.

Paul Engin
Well, that's what I was gonna say.Do you smell, like, burger?Like, do they, like, like, is it, like, chicken-

Dave Ghidiu
Espe- well, especially when-

Paul Engin
...sandwiches?

Dave Ghidiu
...they bring it to the seat next to you.

Paul Engin
Oh.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
Jeez.

Jeff Kidd
I actually thought... So I, I think it was the first Dr. Strange movie.

I saw it in one of these theaters, and I feel like it was, we were, we were, we, we wanted to experience that. We wanted it to be there while the movie was playing, whereas most people had come early, ate, and then they- ... watch the movie.

Paul Engin
Mm-hmm.

Jeff Kidd
So I felt like we were disturbing people by having our food delivered and we were eating it, like-

Paul Engin
Oh, no

Jeff Kidd
...in the middle of the movie.

Paul Engin
I, I did wonder, did that interrupt your view?Like, do they come and say, "Hello, sir, d- here's your-

Jeff Kidd
No

Paul Engin
...Can I get you condiments?" Like-

Jeff Kidd
They're, they're very-

Paul Engin
I don't know.I don't know.

Jeff Kidd
"Can we get you condiments?"

Dave Ghidiu
I think they, they try very hard to not be disruptive. And there's so much room, like way more legroom than there is even at, like, the AMC theaters or the, uh-

Paul Engin
Regal

Dave Ghidiu
... Regal theaters. There's way more room to navigate, so there's no... You don't have to, like, pull your feet up if someone's walking in front of you. Um, it was, it was, it was a nice experience. I would do it again.

And this is the one in Pittsford.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
And the company Apple is not related to Apple-

Paul Engin
Okay

Dave Ghidiu
...but they are involved in a lawsuit regarding the name.

Jeff Kidd
Mm-hmm.

Paul Engin
That's true.

Jeff Kidd
It-

Dave Ghidiu
Um-

Jeff Kidd
That's right

Dave Ghidiu
...yeah, so it, it was a good experience.I liked the movie.I thought the movie was great.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Paul Engin
Mm-hmm.

Dave Ghidiu
I, I actually don't think it was my favorite Spider-Man, but I thought it was great.

Jeff Kidd
It's not my favorite Spider-Man, I will say that.

Paul Engin
I will say that as well.I, I, I know, like, people are raving about it, and I'm, I'm glad I saw it.I'm glad I saw it on opening day, but I'm not...It's not the...And I always use this-

Jeff Kidd
And by the way, no spoilers-

Paul Engin
Yeah, we're not

Jeff Kidd
...for...We, we've already, we discussed that, but we need to state it here.

Paul Engin
No spoilers.

Jeff Kidd
This is a non-spoiler conversation review.

Paul Engin
I thought it had...You know what I felt? And, and I saw it with my daughter and, uh, and she said the same thing. You need to see it to build up for Doomsday is what I felt.

Jeff Kidd
Really?

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
I didn't think that at all.

Dave Ghidiu
No, but I like...I do appreciate how every movie, and you had said this before, is, like, very intentional with what they're doing-

Paul Engin
Yes

Dave Ghidiu
... even if you don't know in the moment. But you're like, you look back on it, and you're like, "Oh, that's why they did that thing three movies ago." So I like that, and I lo- 'cause I love the whole, like, lore narrative in the universe.Um, I liked it because it was a good Spider-Man movie.

Jeff Kidd
Mm-hmm.

Dave Ghidiu
It was very good.I don't know, um, I don't know that it nee- you need to see it to lead up to Doomsday, but maybe you do.I don't know. We, we won't know until we see Doomsday.

Jeff Kidd
It's hype for it, though.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
Oh, it's the hype.I think that's where-

Jeff Kidd
It's hyping it for Doomsday.

Paul Engin
Right.

Jeff Kidd
Yes.I'll, I'll give it that.

Paul Engin
Because it wasn't, like...I don't know. There's, like, some movies, and I'm gonna I'm gonna tell you how old I am, where, like, when we went to see Die Hard on opening night, when it-

Dave Ghidiu
Die- the original?

Paul Engin
The original.

Dave Ghidiu
You saw that in the theater?

Paul Engin
Yeah.We were in a line.Like, there was a huge line, right? But when you go in, the crowd is like, "Oh!"

Dave Ghidiu
Yep.

Paul Engin
"No!"

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah, yeah.

Paul Engin
And, like, there's, like, cra- like-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah

Paul Engin
...and you're getting into it.

Dave Ghidiu
Mm-hmm.

Paul Engin
And you're...Everyone is cracking up, and it wasn't like that in, at least in my theater, it wasn't-

Dave Ghidiu
No

Paul Engin
...that, that-

Dave Ghidiu
Mine either.

Jeff Kidd
You gotta go to the midnight showings if you want people-

Dave Ghidiu
Yes

Jeff Kidd
...in costume, like, slinging webs and-

Dave Ghidiu
Yes.

Paul Engin
Oh, and it was at night.I think I did do the Die Hard at, like, an evening showing.

Dave Ghidiu
Well-

Jeff Kidd
Well, okay, yeah

Dave Ghidiu
...I'm surprised Die Hard One even had that fanfare because no one thought it was gonna be s-

Paul Engin
Well, I, it was just-

Dave Ghidiu
Wow

Paul Engin
...everyone just started going crazy.

Jeff Kidd
Oh, but was it one of those things where it could've been, like, like, Star Wars or something like that? It's like, oh, the word of mouth.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
Everyone's hyped for it.We all know what we're gonna go see, and we're excited for it.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
So yeah, I get that.

Paul Engin
Yeah. But I was wondering if the general admission was like that.

Jeff Kidd
No.

Paul Engin
That's what...No, it wasn't.

Jeff Kidd
No, because we went, there were a lot of kids.

Paul Engin
Mm-hmm.

Jeff Kidd
And I mean, like, little kids.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
Like, really, really little kids.So a lot of them were, like, asking questions and-

Paul Engin
Well

Jeff Kidd
...talking through it, which-

Paul Engin
It seems like an older Spider-Man.

Jeff Kidd
It-

Paul Engin
Like, like, for an older audience.

Jeff Kidd
It, it, which it was.I agree with that, but still, kids are gonna-

Paul Engin
Yeah

Jeff Kidd
...see it, and want to go.

Dave Ghidiu
One other...Speaking of older Spider-Man, like, his costume was kinda like the 1960s one.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
But it was like m- up until this point, I think for the most part, his costume's been CGI.I think he was in, like, Spandex for the whole movie.

Jeff Kidd
Oh, he really was, for sure.

Dave Ghidiu
Which, which I liked. It was cool. You could see the texture, and you could see the wrinkles in it.

Jeff Kidd
Yep.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
You could actually see his eyes, too.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
Like, through the mesh.

Dave Ghidiu
Yes.

Jeff Kidd
That was, that's a first, which I liked a lot.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
Okay, so we, we give it, we give it high marks.

Jeff Kidd
We do.

Paul Engin
Yes.Yep.I-

Jeff Kidd
Yes, we do.

Paul Engin
Yep.But it wasn't...I don't think it was the best Spider-Man.

Jeff Kidd
No.No.

Paul Engin
So.

Jeff Kidd
No.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
But good.My wife, she's, she's not into this.She doesn't care about movies.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
She's not into the, you know, Marvel or any of that stuff. She, I said, "Well, what'd you think?" And she's like, "It's just another Spider-Man movie."

Paul Engin
Can I-

Jeff Kidd
"It's just more Spider-Man."

Paul Engin
Will I ruin something if I talk about an older Spider-Man?

Jeff Kidd
No.

Paul Engin
Okay.So my daughter-

Jeff Kidd
How, how, are we going back to, like, '80s Spider-Man?

Paul Engin
No, no, no, no, no, no.

Jeff Kidd
Like, are we going to stay in the '80s?

Paul Engin
Um, when, when you saw all the Spider-Men come on-

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Paul Engin
My daughter went on an opening night for that, and she goes, as soon as they came out, everyone in the theater was like, "No!" And people were clapping.

Jeff Kidd
Mm-hmm.

Paul Engin
And it was like-

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
Mm-hmm

Paul Engin
...and she was like, "Unfortunately, I didn't get that-"

Jeff Kidd
Oh, yeah

Paul Engin
..."here." So she-

Dave Ghidiu
Because she didn't see the Toby Maguire ones or the Andrew Garfield ones.

Paul Engin
Right.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
So but when she got there, she saw...She ended up seeing all of them, but when she was at the theater, she was expecting that type of-

Dave Ghidiu
Energy and...yeah, yeah

Paul Engin
...the same energy that she got from that-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah

Paul Engin
...that previous movie, and it wasn't there.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
Um, but-

Dave Ghidiu
It had, it had less fan service, I think.

Jeff Kidd
But that's also better, it's better that way.It, from a storytelling perspective, it's, it's, we're not rehashing the same thing over and over again.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
It's not, you know, the Star Wars sequels, which were, that, what they were trying to do-

Dave Ghidiu
Which were terrible

Jeff Kidd
...unfortunately.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
But anyway.

Paul Engin
All right.So we went-

Jeff Kidd
Good

Paul Engin
...beyond our six minutes.Good job.

Dave Ghidiu
Okay.

Jeff Kidd
Well, he didn't start the timer again-

Paul Engin
Oh

Jeff Kidd
...so I have no idea how long it went.

Paul Engin
Oh, unbelievable.

Jeff Kidd
Okay.

Paul Engin
All right.Go ahead, Dave.

Dave Ghidiu
So the next thing I wanna share is Lyria 3.5.

This is Google Music, so if you've used, say, Suno.ai, which creates full-length songs, Google just released their current version. And if you went to Gemini a few weeks ago, and you're like, "Make me a song," it would do, like, 30 seconds. It might do a minute, but this is full-blown. You can give it lyrics. You can give it, uh, like, tone, and it makes really good songs. So I made a sea shanty. I actually had Claude go out and research all of the previous episodes of the Immersive Lens to get, like, the DNA of what we do-

Paul Engin
Okay

Dave Ghidiu
...and the shared sensibility. And so I had Claude write a prompt that I could use here to make a sea shanty about the Immersive Lens.So I will post that on the website and, uh-

Paul Engin
Can we hear a little bit of it?

Jeff Kidd
You don't have it ready now?

Paul Engin
I know.

Dave Ghidiu
I, I do have it now.I don't know how to...Can, can I just give it to you, and in post we can, like-

Paul Engin
Well, we can, or you could just move the mic to the-

Dave Ghidiu
All right.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah, yeah.I wanna hear it now.

Paul Engin
We could go old school.

Jeff Kidd
We wanna hear it.

Dave Ghidiu
Okay.

Jeff Kidd
So you react to it.

Dave Ghidiu
All right.

Jeff Kidd
We'll give you, I'll give you an extra, we'll give you an extra minute-

Dave Ghidiu
Okay

Jeff Kidd
...for that.Here, so...

Speaker 5
Professors and- As the hype game thickens dense. So we trimmed the sail and took a look through the immersive lens.

Paul Engin
So, wait -

Dave Ghidiu
I like that

Paul Engin
...did you write the lyric?

Dave Ghidiu
No.

Paul Engin
So you know lyrics?

Dave Ghidiu
No, Clau- Claude wrote the lyrics. So you don't have to have the lyrics made w- if you wanna use this tool, but you can, and Claude wrote them based on his research of the 30 episodes we've had so far.

And in fact, I do mention lenses in here, so if you are a lensy- ... uh, y- you might appreciate it more.

Paul Engin
All right. And so you're gonna, you're gonna share that with us?

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah, I'll s- I'll share it with you.

Paul Engin
Okay.I'm just looking at, 'cause I'm geeking out like this, I'm just looking at attributions for this.So it's MIT license.Oh, oh, so you're not allowed to own...So someone else could take our-

Dave Ghidiu
Y- anything AI generates cannot be copyrighted-

Paul Engin
Yeah, yeah.That makes sense

Dave Ghidiu
...ever, as of right now.

Paul Engin
Makes sense.

Dave Ghidiu
So, so people can actually, they can snipe the Immersive Lens Sea Shanties and sell it.All right, that's two minutes.

Paul Engin
But that's cool.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
I like it so far.

Dave Ghidiu
That's really neat.Um, so it's int- does this whole copyright thing d- even if you do a derivative of it and use it as a tool, don't you own the rights to your derivative of- No

Paul Engin
...whatever it produces?

Dave Ghidiu
I- an AI cannot be... Anything created by AI currently cannot be copy... I'm not a lawyer, but the most recent case that I've seen says nothing that AI creates can be copywritten without significant, um, input from the user, and that is a little ambiguous right now.

Paul Engin
Okay.Yeah, 'cause I saw...Okay, 'cause that, I always wonder about that.So I assume code that's written by AI-

Dave Ghidiu
Code can't be copyrighted anyhow-

Paul Engin
But-

Dave Ghidiu
...just writ large

Paul Engin
...but what it produces can be copywritten, right?

Dave Ghidiu
Oh, yeah.

Paul Engin
Like, if I produce this VR studio, it's not open for anybody.

Dave Ghidiu
I would say th- a- and again, I'm not a lawyer, that the amount of human intervention you've had in that process would probably give you grounds to...But you can't copyright code.

Paul Engin
But you can c- copyright the product it produces, otherwise-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah

Paul Engin
...every, every software could be-

Dave Ghidiu
There's other license and protections-

Paul Engin
There-

Dave Ghidiu
...but they're, they're not copyright, but there's an, the analog of copyright.

Paul Engin
Right.Interesting.

Dave Ghidiu
So that was a semantic pedantic.

Paul Engin
Yeah.Jeff's like- ..."Can we move on please?"

Dave Ghidiu
No, no, no.I was, that's, that's interesting-

Paul Engin
Thank you

Dave Ghidiu
...you know, from a, you know-

Paul Engin
Yeah

Dave Ghidiu
...video production and, you know, copyright.

Paul Engin
Mm.

Dave Ghidiu
All right.So who's up next?

Paul Engin
Jeff, do you wanna go?

Dave Ghidiu
Oh, I wasn't ready.You go.

Paul Engin
Okay.Um, so-

Dave Ghidiu
Starting the timer.

Paul Engin
So, so again, I'm gonna geek out again. I'm, I'm r- I'm trying to do research onto open source, um, tools, and, uh, tools that, um, you can use freely.

Y- you might need a system to do it, but, um, I found this one tool, um, when I was doing research on the mouth animations. Um, I found this tool from, uh, Nvidia, and Nvidia has a huge, um, repository for open source, um, tools. But, um, what this does is it's, uh, something you can download and install and, um, you can create motion, um, so movement, like human movement. So I can say move forward, or I can pick two points and have a person move. Um, and then I can take that motion and put it on my character. Does that make sense?

Dave Ghidiu
And this is AI backed?

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
So-

Paul Engin
So I can prompt it. So I can say, um, "Do a, um, a box step," and, you know, it'll create that motion, and then I can take that motion and refine it a little bit, but then I can move it onto my character.

Dave Ghidiu
So th- two questions. One, what software do you wind up putting this in?Like in Premiere?

Paul Engin
Blender, Maya-

Dave Ghidiu
Okay, okay

Paul Engin
...and a 3D application.

Dave Ghidiu
Okay. And the second thing is, so sometimes open source, and I love the idea of open source-

Paul Engin
Mm-hmm

Dave Ghidiu
...and it, it seems so easy.So could someone without a lot of technical acumen take this and do something cool with it?

Paul Engin
Not yet.

Dave Ghidiu
Okay.

Paul Engin
But the tool itself...Well, the problem is, is a lot of these tools require several step install. It's not a simple, like, double click and it installs-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah

Paul Engin
...and you run it.

Dave Ghidiu
It's not like an app store and you-

Paul Engin
Right.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
You have to run a terminal. You have to make sure Python is in... Like, you have to do a few steps, but, um, the, the concept is there, and I'm sure someone will build a, something where you can double click and install it-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah

Paul Engin
...and then you'll be able to create the motion. But then, you know, there's the steps outside of using this that you would have to migrate it over to whatever tool you're using.

Dave Ghidiu
Okay.

Paul Engin
Um, so, uh, I, I, I thought it was really cool the, the prompting and, um, yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
And we'll have a link to that in the show notes. Is this replacing mocap?

Paul Engin
Uh, mocap?Motion cap.

Dave Ghidiu
Motion capture.

Paul Engin
Yeah.So it's, uh-

Dave Ghidiu
Motion capture is where a, a, actor-

Paul Engin
Like-

Dave Ghidiu
...so a person would mo- would do the motion that then we would then translate that into, like, an animation or like something for a video game.

Paul Engin
Like Gollum from-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah

Paul Engin
...whatever.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
Okay.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah, yeah.

Paul Engin
Yeah. So, um, it's a version of it, um, where you can capture motion and then...But it's prompting versus someone acting.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah, but that's what I'm saying.Like, would this replace that?

Paul Engin
It could.Um, you'll never...The, I think the advantages of some of that motion capture is because tho- they interact with the actors sometimes.Like, so if it's like, you know-

Dave Ghidiu
A fight

Paul Engin
...a CG-

Dave Ghidiu
A physical fight-

Paul Engin
Yeah

Dave Ghidiu
...like you and I are fighting, it's gonna be more natural than trying to do it this way.

Paul Engin
Right.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
So, um, I think that this is just a nice... Like, if I wanted to do a, um, a parkour style animation or something, I can say, you know, parkour up to this block, then to this block, then to this post, and then I can migrate that movement over to my character where I have a similar setup.

Dave Ghidiu
That's cool.

Paul Engin
So-

Dave Ghidiu
I see.Yeah.Mm-hmm

Paul Engin
... um, yeah. And I think they're using it for much more than that. They're using it for studies. Um- ... you know, 'cause they're eventually training robots for movement, if this making sense. So they use this as the testing, and then they use similar systems to then integrate into those systems, so.

But I like it because I can migrate it over to the 3D stuff I do, so. All right. Now are you ready?

Jeff Kidd
Now I'm ready.

Paul Engin
Okay.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah, yeah, yeah.I, we, this is sort of a follow-up, so this, this could be pretty short.Start the timer.

Paul Engin
Oh.Timer has been started.

Jeff Kidd
Um, I was, uh, work- working with someone this weekend, and he pre-ordered the Samsung Galaxy Fold 8.

Paul Engin
Really?

Jeff Kidd
We were just talking about that.

Paul Engin
We were just-

Jeff Kidd
Yes

Paul Engin
...talking about that on the-

Jeff Kidd
Yeah, we were just talking about it.

Paul Engin
The Passport.

Jeff Kidd
Yes.And it made me kinda look into it a little more. And the reviews are coming out. It's really good.

Dave Ghidiu
Oh, no.It's doing what it, we didn't think it could do?

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
It's, like, attracting an iPhone person?

Jeff Kidd
Ah, it's look- well-

Paul Engin
Did you look at it?

Jeff Kidd
Or-

Paul Engin
Did you actually see one?

Jeff Kidd
I watched.I didn't actually, like-

Paul Engin
Oh

Jeff Kidd
...hold one in my hands, but I watched a couple rev- of, of reviews of people are saying it's the best one they've ever made.

Dave Ghidiu
I mean, they've been at the Fold for a long time.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Paul Engin
But even better than the, than their-

Jeff Kidd
Yeah

Paul Engin
...than their, um, horizontal, the one that they've had for a while.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah, the Z Fold.

Paul Engin
The Z Fold.

Jeff Kidd
The other Folds, the other Flips, they're saying it's the best.

Dave Ghidiu
Now, you specifically said you did not like that form factor.

Jeff Kidd
No.I know.

Dave Ghidiu
I was like-

Paul Engin
I just heard that on the way here

Dave Ghidiu
...we are issuing an errata.Another errata.

Jeff Kidd
I don't know. It's making me think.I tell you why.I tell you what it is, why I'm c- why I, why I would do it.And I've actually kind of talked to Paul about this a little bit over the years.

Dave Ghidiu
We're gonna need more than two minutes on this.

Jeff Kidd
I miss-

Dave Ghidiu
I'm gonna pause it.

Jeff Kidd
No, no, no.No.This is, is s- I'm a one-handed phone user.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
I wanna be... And I have the, the PopSocket so I can be one-handed. The best, and, and Dave, you can comment on, on, on this too. The form, the best form factor iPhone I've ever had was the 11 Pro, because it was 5.8 inches. It was perfect.

I could have it in my hand. I could reach the top with-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah, it was the perfect size to get in your pocket.Yeah

Jeff Kidd
...with my th- I didn't have to have anything on it.And ev- and they haven't gone back.5.8 inches is perfect. And when they were just going over this phone folded, it's 5.5 inches.

Dave Ghidiu
Oh.

Jeff Kidd
So I was like, ooh, I could do it one-handed with that. And then I could open it if I wanted to watch stuff.

And they were talking about how the bars are smaller, so the screen aspect ratio, it fills more screen.

Dave Ghidiu
Oh.

Jeff Kidd
How it actually kind of comes close to being this size anyway.

Dave Ghidiu
The size...So you're holding up your current phone.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah, I'm holding up my-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah

Jeff Kidd
...and the, the, this is the 15 Pro Max.So it's not much smaller than if I just had it on here with the, with bars on it.I was like, ooh.

Dave Ghidiu
And so, uh, two questions.

Jeff Kidd
Maybe.

Dave Ghidiu
O- o- one observational question.I think Samsung's phones are fantastic.If I didn't buy-

Paul Engin
Yeah.Yeah

Dave Ghidiu
...the vanilla Android, like the Pixel, I would definitely get a Samsung. But my question for you is, is it enough for you to bust out of the ecosystem?

Jeff Kidd
No.

Dave Ghidiu
Okay.

Jeff Kidd
I'm just saying that it's making me want-

Paul Engin
When the Apple comes out-

Jeff Kidd
Yeah

Paul Engin
...he might shift.But-

Jeff Kidd
But they're say...This, so the Z Fold 8, I guess, is $1,900.The Apple's is gonna be-

Dave Ghidiu
Oh, it's gonna be, like, $3,000.

Jeff Kidd
I don't...Yeah.With the, with tariffs and the memory shortage and all that kind of stuff, I'm sure it's gonna be crazy expensive.

Dave Ghidiu
And the Apple tax.

Jeff Kidd
That's what I'm saying.Like-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah

Jeff Kidd
...it'll be, and it's Apple.Like, I would pay nine- for, for that, I don't even know if I'd pay $1,900.But I'm paying $1,200 now because I pay for extra storage.

Dave Ghidiu
Mm.

Paul Engin
So here's the argument with that. It's equivalent to you buying an iPad and an iPhone.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
That's true.It s- replaces two devices.

Paul Engin
It replaces two, 'cause I was thinking-

Dave Ghidiu
Oh

Paul Engin
...the same thing.Like, I was like, right now I have an iPad that I'll, I'll bust out once in a while. And I will say we buy Samsung-specific Android devices normally, um-

Jeff Kidd
For the program, the-

Paul Engin
For the pro-

Jeff Kidd
Yeah

Paul Engin
... New Media program because we do development with Android. And we found that they're, they're pretty reliable in what, what we're trying to achieve.

Um, so I, I feel like I wanna play, I wanna go to a store, and I just wanna c- like I said, when I, when I saw the new, that new thin Fold, I was like, I, this could, this could convert me. It's thin. When I op- I have the tablet.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.You, you'll ne-

Paul Engin
But-

Dave Ghidiu
...you'll never bust out of the ecosystem.

Paul Engin
I'm not.I'm not.

Jeff Kidd
But it's, it's... Okay, battery life, it's got, it needs to be really good, for me anyway. For that amount of money, battery life, I... My battery's at, maybe at 80%.

I've had it for t- it'll be three years coming up. I can't get through a day, not even close.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.Well-

Jeff Kidd
It's a lot of screen.Uh-

Dave Ghidiu
But Apple is known for planned obsolescence in battery.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
They specifically throttle their batteries.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
Um, I'm... Listen, what gives... And I, I know we're, we're going a little off-script, but Google Chromebooks are, which, like, I love the Chromebook. I own a PC.

I own a Mac. I own a few Macs, and I use my Chromebook for almost everything.

And maybe, maybe, maybe you guys will let me try and convince you to Chromebooks. But the next iteration's called a Google Book, and it's coming out in the fall.

Jeff Kidd
Yes.

Dave Ghidiu
And Samsung has one.And all of a sudden, I'm like, oh, the ecosystem of Chromebooks with...Or I'm sorry, Google Books with maybe-

Paul Engin
Android

Dave Ghidiu
... this new... Yeah. So I'm really, really excited about that.

And the ecosystem that I'm jealous of with, like, Sidecar on the Macs where you can put your tablet next to it and the screen automa- it's like a second screen, and you can copy and paste between devices. Like, I don't think we're far off from that. We kinda have that on Chromebooks right now on Android, but the next iteration of the Google Books.

Paul Engin
So can I...I know we're way over our 10 minutes. But with Android, do you ever feel, and I'll call it bloatware, 'cause I remember-

Dave Ghidiu
That's why you buy the Pixel. It doesn't have p- bloatware.

Paul Engin
Okay.All right.

Jeff Kidd
Samsung, though, they, it does?

Paul Engin
Yeah, well, it's got its, uh, its own Samsung, like, applications-

Jeff Kidd
App store.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
Although they're trimming that down. They got rid of Samsung Messages and now, like, are using Google proper Messages.

So, like, but you're right. Like, any time you buy any software or any hardware from a third party, you, you're gonna get bloatware on it.

Paul Engin
Right. And when we say bloatware, we're meaning, like, even if you buy, um, a Samsung, you will get their Samsung- ...applications on there. You'll get their, uh, whatever they're trying to push.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
Um, and-

Dave Ghidiu
Even, even their s-

Paul Engin
And you get all the Google stuff.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah, but it-

Paul Engin
Like-

Dave Ghidiu
Like, Google, th- their settings menu is different than the Android settings. So, like, they're going into Android, and they're paying the license fee, and they're tweaking things.And-

Paul Engin
Right

Dave Ghidiu
...and so, like, they're, they're adding to it, and I think that just adds to the mess. But listen-

Paul Engin
Yeah

Dave Ghidiu
...if it's a cool phone, and if I had an extra $4,000, I'd buy one of them- ...and, like, another computer or two.

Jeff Kidd
And it doesn't change any- Like, you don't have to code anything differently.Like, when you make apps for things, do you have to code it differently s-

Dave Ghidiu
No

Jeff Kidd
...for-

Dave Ghidiu
If it works on Android, it works.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Paul Engin
Yeah, and so...And that, here's a cool thing. We, we have the, we have the older Fold, and, um, when we're doing application development, since we're doing all percentage based, it, it scales to-

Jeff Kidd
Mm

Paul Engin
...the...So when we flip it open, it actually works still great, so.

Jeff Kidd
But is it worth re- like, doing it specifically for these phones?

Paul Engin
No.

Jeff Kidd
So you have, like, half a page here doing this, the other half doing that.

Dave Ghidiu
Oh.Oh, yeah. They'll, they'll have to have the API, and they've done that already because those Folds have been out for a while. So it's not-

Paul Engin
Right

Dave Ghidiu
...it's not hard.

Paul Engin
Yeah, we, I have not had our students... 'Cause they're just learning this right now.

But yeah, I get... I think if you were just specifically building an app for that, and you wanted to utilize those, like, fold it so it looks like a keyboard-

Dave Ghidiu
A keyboard or-

Paul Engin
...or something.

Dave Ghidiu
Or have data, different data display differently.

Paul Engin
Yeah, but I think that it actually builds it so it scales up whatever you've done anyway, and it'll put the keyboard there if that's a...I don't know.I haven't-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah, like, we've seen responsive apps.Like if you look at-

Paul Engin
Right

Dave Ghidiu
...any app on a big screen or a small screen, it changes, and so there is a responsiveness.I'm sure there's an API for, like, this fold thing.

Paul Engin
Yeah, yeah.All right.

Jeff Kidd
I, but, uh, uh, I would try Google Book.

Dave Ghidiu
All right.

Paul Engin
I haven't seen-

Jeff Kidd
I don't know about that

Paul Engin
...Google Book.

Jeff Kidd
It's not out yet.

Dave Ghidiu
It's not out yet.

Paul Engin
Not out yet.

Dave Ghidiu
But they do have this, like, um, I think all of them are gonna have, like, this light, kind of like Night Rider on the outside, but it's the Google colors that'll go back and forth.

Paul Engin
Oh, that'd be cool.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.Um, but it is...So the Google Book is built with AI from the ground up, much unlike every other PC you've bought has, like, AI bolted on.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
So, like, your cursor can kind of contextually tell what you might want to do based on where it is and what's on the screen. So it's just, it's, it's a really interesting perspective of, um, AI integration.

Like, this is the next it- iteration.

Jeff Kidd
It's one that's purely it.It would be like it's hardware, software, integration specifically for AI.That's what I would want to be in.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
That'd be interesting.Okay, let's move on.

Paul Engin
That sounds like an Apple device.I'm not sure.

Jeff Kidd
Let's-

Dave Ghidiu
Oh, yeah-

Jeff Kidd
Let's go away

Dave Ghidiu
...'cause the AI and Apple devices are so good.

Paul Engin
All right, uh.

Jeff Kidd
Do you want to do some...

Dave Ghidiu
Mm.

Jeff Kidd
I mean, you're sitting there.

Dave Ghidiu
Okay.So the next topic-

Jeff Kidd
Move on.Let's move on now.

Dave Ghidiu
Before it gets violent in here. The next topic, uh, I just want to give some Google updates.

So one, now with Google Notebook, or, I'm sorry, Gemini Notebook, which used to be called Notebook LM, they just changed the name of it. But you, they now have collections, so you can group them. So we've been missing that hierarchy. It was just basically you'd have, like, 100 different notebooks, but now you can group them and cluster them in these things called collections. Another thing I want to share is that you can now make... If you al- alter the URL, so if you're sharing the URL of your notebook, or this is also true for Gems, you can make it so it forces a copy. So the user can make their own copy without having to go to, like, file, copy. They... So-

Paul Engin
Oh

Dave Ghidiu
...which is kind of cool.

Paul Engin
Okay.

Dave Ghidiu
Um, but one of the things that I'm really excited about uh, in Chrome, and this has been out for a little while, but it just came to my, uh, Neo that I'm on right now, is vertical tabs in Chrome. So because screens are landscape, uh, you lose a lot of vertical space when you have the tabs at the top.

So now they have them on the side vertical, and it's really cool. And Firefox has had that for a while, but it, it's in the full, it's fully fledged, fully baked in Chrome right now.

Paul Engin
Is that a de- Is that a feature you have to enable?

Dave Ghidiu
Yes.It's a setting, and I forgot where I did it already. But I think it would basically pop up.It was like, "Hey, congratulations.Do, do you want vertical tabs?" And I was like, "Yeah." Um, it-

Paul Engin
Congratulations.

Dave Ghidiu
But-

Paul Engin
What did I do?

Dave Ghidiu
But, uh, well, I think it's 'cause I updated.

Paul Engin
Ah.

Dave Ghidiu
But, um, much like, you know, if you're using, let's say, like, Gemini or Y- or, or ChatGPT-

Paul Engin
Right

Dave Ghidiu
...you can collapse the sidebar.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
It does the same thing, and then you just get, like, the n- So it's, it's just a really interesting way of, um, browsing, and that's kind of like how all, every other software is. Like, when you're developing, you get the sidebar when... Like, even in Photoshop, like, you have the sidebar. So I like it.

Paul Engin
Yeah. And even our Google Docs when we're using, uh-

Dave Ghidiu
Google Docs, yeah

Paul Engin
...the docs that we use for the show, we have it on the, the tabs on the left.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
Yep.Horizontal, vertical.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
Yep, and there they are.

Dave Ghidiu
Okay.It might take a little while-

Paul Engin
Where'd you-

Dave Ghidiu
...to get used to.

Paul Engin
Where'd you see the?

Jeff Kidd
It's in, uh, it's go to settings.

Paul Engin
Uh-huh.

Dave Ghidiu
Folks, get out your computers right now-

Jeff Kidd
And hit-

Dave Ghidiu
...even if you're driving.Go to settings.

Paul Engin
Settings.

Dave Ghidiu
Doing a tutorial.

Paul Engin
Appearance.Okay.Oh, look at that.Even while we're talking.

Jeff Kidd
And then tabs.Mine was kind of, it was kind of towards the top appearance.

Paul Engin
Oh, tabs position.

Jeff Kidd
And-

Paul Engin
Horizontal.Okay, yeah

Dave Ghidiu
...I didn't like it at first, but it's just, it, but I think I do like it, and I, especially when you collapse it so you just see the icons, like the fave icons of it.

Jeff Kidd
Mm-hmm.

Dave Ghidiu
Um, but it's cool.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
It makes more sense.

Paul Engin
I like that, yeah.Although it's weird because you're so used to them being up there.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
Oh.

Paul Engin
It-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah

Paul Engin
...it takes some getting used to.

Jeff Kidd
Okay, that I like.Collapsing it so it's just the icons.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
Okay.It's like a taskbar.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
I like that.

Dave Ghidiu
All right. So th- tho- those are some, that, some updates from the land of Google.

Jeff Kidd
I'll try it.

Paul Engin
You know what? That's really interesting.I think a lot of people will use that feature.

Jeff Kidd
I'm gonna try it.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.I think it might be the default in Firefox, actually.I don't know.

Jeff Kidd
Hmm.I haven't used Firefox in forever.

Dave Ghidiu
All right. So we'll, we'll report back next week.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Paul Engin
Yes.Yes.All right, Jeff.

Jeff Kidd
Uh, it's your turn.

Paul Engin
No, I don't have any more.

Jeff Kidd
Oh, you don't have any more?Oh, okay.Um-

Paul Engin
I'm just commenting now.

Jeff Kidd
Oh, oh, I moved a lot, all my tabs.

Dave Ghidiu
Where did they go?

Paul Engin
It's confused them. It's on your left now.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah, I know, but, like, I had 'em, I had 'em all open.I had everything open.No.Um, oh, man.Okay, well-

Dave Ghidiu
We need to stand by the technical difficulties music.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.Do, do-do, do-do.

Paul Engin
Uh, well, I can tell you something that, uh-

Jeff Kidd
Where'd it go?

Paul Engin
...was interesting, and we're gonna touch on this a little bit, was that, um, they're talking about all the g- um, gaming layoffs. The, um-

Jeff Kidd
Oh yeah, like at Bungie and Microsoft

Paul Engin
...at Bungie and Microsoft and, uh-

Jeff Kidd
Where'd my...Let's go

Paul Engin
It was interesting.I saw a video on why this year-

Jeff Kidd
It was like 3,200 jobs or whatever

Paul Engin
...Oh, yeah, thousands and tens of thousands of jobs have been lost in the last several weeks.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Paul Engin
And, um, and it's interesting because you can see it, and you know what they, they related it all to... And this could be completely off, but try to follow my trail or, or tell me, "Paul, you are crazy."

Jeff Kidd
Oh, I found it.Okay.

Paul Engin
It starts with all the memory issues that we're running into, and I'm like, "Memory issues we're running into?"

Jeff Kidd
So you're talking about RAM and-

Paul Engin
RAM, yeah. And, uh, and so what they said is, um, picture a PlayStation requiring one RAM chip, okay?

Jeff Kidd
Oh, I think I saw this comparison.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
Go ahead.Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Paul Engin
And, um, and so the cost of building that goes up, but if a RAM company is, like, supplying RAM, do you give it to a PlayStation or do you give it to a data center that has a magnitude of almost 100 times the RAM that's needed for that PlayStation? And so if they had to allocate money for building RAM, does it go... Where do, where do you allocate that?

Because they're, they don't have enough, oop, they don't have enough, um, manufacturing capabilities right now to accommodate everybody.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Paul Engin
So they f- their, their business model is, "We can make $100 here, or we can make 100 million here, and let's, let's go toward that 100 million," which is the data centers.

So what's happening is that less PlayStations are being built, less need for building a new PlayStation 6-

Jeff Kidd
Mm-hmm

Paul Engin
...or Xbox-

Jeff Kidd
Mm-hmm

Paul Engin
...the, a new Xbox, and so they have all the same old platforms still. And so there aren't new titles being built for a new system that's being built.

Jeff Kidd
So not for a new system, but you're gonna need, like, Final Fantasy 57, and you're gonna need NBA 2K27 or whatever. So new game- There's still space for new games.

Paul Engin
New...Yes, but usually what they do is they do, when the new systems come out, they need an entire new graphics-

Jeff Kidd
Oh, yeah

Paul Engin
...need higher-

Jeff Kidd
I see, I see, the infrastructure

Paul Engin
... so the infrastructure. So all of these, "Okay, we're gonna do higher resolution models. We're gonna do all of these things that are revamped and updated," versus, "All right, well, it's, we're gonna use the same models.

We're just gonna... The engine's already there. We're not gonna... We don't need to do anything new with the engine."

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Paul Engin
"No new user interface, no..." So, and it was funny when you saw this correlation, and even, um, I think they said Samsung, Micron, and there was one other company that does RAM.Really-

Jeff Kidd
Mm-hmm

Paul Engin
...those are the three-

Jeff Kidd
Yeah

Paul Engin
...largest manufacturers. And, um, and they said that, um, one of these companies actually cut their consumer, like-

Jeff Kidd
Mm-hmm.Microsoft did.Crucial.

Paul Engin
Their, their consumer RAM.

Jeff Kidd
Microsoft owns Crucial, I think.

Paul Engin
Oh, is that why Crucial-

Jeff Kidd
And yeah, Crucial, um, is not making consumer memory anymore.

Paul Engin
So it's only going to these things because-

Jeff Kidd
It's only going data- to data centers.Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron.

Paul Engin
Okay.There it is.Thank you.

Jeff Kidd
The three of them, yes.

Dave Ghidiu
And they're building Micron in Syracuse, our next-door neighbor.

Paul Engin
Yeah, which is, uh, which is awesome.I'm thinking to myself, that is the issue, and it was like, oh my gosh, it's...What are your thoughts on that?I don't know.

Dave Ghidiu
I thought you were gonna say you were thinking of organizing a heist from Micron- ...so we can get RAM.

Paul Engin
It, it's, it's close by.

Dave Ghidiu
It's, oh, come on, guys.

Jeff Kidd
In Syracuse.Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Paul Engin
But, um, that will lead to other things that you're gonna probably talk about.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah, we'll talk kind of a, a little bit, yeah.

Paul Engin
Um, but it was just a interesting...You saw that-

Jeff Kidd
Yes, it was.Yes, it was.So you...A PlayStation, right, costs this much, and then they wanna order X amount of PlayStations.Or you cater to here's, uh, um, a-

Dave Ghidiu
A data center

Jeff Kidd
...an, an AI computer. But you don't buy a single one of those. You buy a cluster. So and then in that cluster, you get a rack of this, and then you can't just buy one, so you buy all-

Paul Engin
Yeah

Jeff Kidd
...these different ones.So yes. It's like, the, the, rather than s- you know, you know, and that equivalent in PlayStations is, like, millions of PlayStations or something like that.

Paul Engin
Yeah, it was, it was something like, yeah, they...

Jeff Kidd
In order to make up the difference to-

Paul Engin
They would have to sell-

Jeff Kidd
Like, yeah

Paul Engin
...like, like, 350 million.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah, it was an insane amount of PlayStations-

Dave Ghidiu
Probably like-

Jeff Kidd
...to, to make that kind of money

Dave Ghidiu
... 10 or 15 years ago, I'll have to see if I can find this article, I read about these researchers, I think in somewhere in out west, like in Arizona maybe. They clustered together a whole bunch of PlayStations 'cause the chips were so pop-

Jeff Kidd
Play, PS3

Dave Ghidiu
...Oh yeah, they made super computers.

Jeff Kidd
It was PS3.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah, the PS3.

Jeff Kidd
Yep.

Dave Ghidiu
And so now we're on the opposite end of that.

Paul Engin
Well, that, that was the same thing with Xbox.They...It spent...The, the Xboxes were more powerful than the computers that were being sold-

Jeff Kidd
Yeah

Paul Engin
...because of all the processing power that they had.But yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
Do, every single PlayStation and Xbox that's ever been sold, with the exception I think of PlayStation 5, costs more to make than it did to buy.

Jeff Kidd
Yes.

Dave Ghidiu
It was a loss leader for the games.

Jeff Kidd
It's always...Yeah.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
Systems have always been a loss.

Dave Ghidiu
So, like, a part of me is like, well, maybe this is a case for cloud computing.I- I- And, and Google-

Jeff Kidd
Yeah

Dave Ghidiu
... Stadia went out of business a while ago, but, uh, Nvidia, uh, GeForce X or whatever Go is still around.

And I'm like, well, if you can't get a device, but we have the capacity to... We have data centers, maybe cloud gaming's coming back, baby.

Paul Engin
Yeah.A lot of...I don't know.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah, I don't know.I don't-

Dave Ghidiu
'Cause see, now they're putting limits on the cloud gaming. It's like you can only use the service for so long.

Paul Engin
Yeah, because they need to allocate it.

Dave Ghidiu
'Cause they need it, yeah.

Paul Engin
All right.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah, I don't know.

Paul Engin
And I know that video game purists, like, scoff at cloud gaming.

Jeff Kidd
I don't personally have a problem with it, 'cause to me it's kind of like you can't, you know...It's not, it's still expensive, but you...$1,500 just for a graphics card to play a game, that's crazy.

Dave Ghidiu
Mm.

Paul Engin
So-

Jeff Kidd
Or pay $20 a month to be able to access that kind of hardware.

Dave Ghidiu
It's the Netflix model.I like it.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Paul Engin
So I agree.I, I'm, I'm wondering if this is the death of, of, uh, consoles. And is everything gonna be online?

Jeff Kidd
So-

Paul Engin
Because HTML5 is becoming so robust now.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.I- and that-

Paul Engin
I don't know.

Jeff Kidd
Well, the PlayStation ...So every- after we had that conversation about how, you know-

Paul Engin
The next-

Jeff Kidd
... the Xbox is gonna, you know, maybe do disks and PlayStation c- right after that, then the network went down. And you ... So if you only own digital copies of those games, you can't play them 'cause the PlayStation network is down.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
So that, then now what do you do?

Dave Ghidiu
Just go, go outside.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah, yeah, touch grass. But that's the saying, to touch grass, right?

Paul Engin
Yeah. But I, I don't know.In about two or three years, I would not be surprised if HTML5 graphics-

Jeff Kidd
Ooh

Paul Engin
...are comparable to what we're seeing-

Jeff Kidd
On like an Unreal Engine?

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
We're getting there. And, and, and I will s- like the projections-

Paul Engin
I don't know

Dave Ghidiu
...for the RAM apocalypse doesn't look good until about 2030.That's when-

Jeff Kidd
Yeah

Dave Ghidiu
...we'll, supply will eventually meet up with demand.

Paul Engin
That's crazy.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
I don't-

Jeff Kidd
I don't even ...I, I, I don't know.

Paul Engin
I don't know.What do you ...PlayStation, I mean, like-

Jeff Kidd
I'm an Xbox person anyway, but that's ...But I've been a p- I've been building PCs for myself forever.

Paul Engin
Mm-hmm.

Jeff Kidd
And it's sad. It's more just sad that I can't ... I mean, I don't need to do anything. My computer's fine, and I'm thankful for that, but it's just sad.

Like, you know, it ... Other, other industries that, that this, that building computers supports, like motherboards, power supplies, like they're all hurting too. 'Cause why buy a new-

Dave Ghidiu
Sure

Jeff Kidd
...motherboard with memory, for memory that you can't afford?

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
And this has been ...Like, you talked about the price of computers for back to school. It's like, it's not getting good.

Jeff Kidd
Yes.No, it's not.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
Not by a long shot.

Paul Engin
All right, we gotta move on.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Paul Engin
I'm sorry.I, I digressed us.Uh-

Jeff Kidd
No, that's, it ...Yeah, yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
Thanks, Paul.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
But that's interesting. You know, that's really interesting.

So my, my topic is Nintendo is, what, sued the government to, uh ... Once, once the, um, federal government said that nope, the tariffs are illegal, Nintendo sued the US government and won. So the, so all these big tech companies, not just Nintendo, are getting all that tariff money back, you know, $600 million Amazon, two, two, $2 million to, or $2 billion to Apple and Nintendo, all that stuff. So now there's, there ap- there's a couple people that are suing Nintendo to try to get that money back.

Dave Ghidiu
Oh, like customers?

Jeff Kidd
Yeah, the customers too, Nintendo customers, uh, filed a, a, a class action lawsuit against Nintendo to say, "Okay, we paid that money. Uh, you got that money back. We should get that. Now it sh- should go back to us."

Paul Engin
Right. It's a, it's supposed to not affect the consumer-

Jeff Kidd
Right

Paul Engin
...but it's affecting the consumer.

Jeff Kidd
You raised the c- yes, you raised the, you raised your prices to offset the cost of those tariffs. Now you got that money back.We should get that money back too because you-

Paul Engin
You still have our money-

Jeff Kidd
You s- you st-

Paul Engin
...and you got the money back

Jeff Kidd
...and you got the tariff money.Yeah, yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
And I totally agree with that.

Paul Engin
Interesting.

Jeff Kidd
How, I don't know how you do that, how you distribute that necessarily.Like, do you ...You know, I bought a Switch, but I didn't pay for that tariff. So I guess you'd have to go back and-

Paul Engin
In the window when the tariffs were issued-

Jeff Kidd
When ...Yeah, right

Paul Engin
...and the price went up.Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
But from Nintendo's perspective, it's like, "Well, you agreed.Y- you bought it.You paid for that."

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
"You agreed to this price."

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
"So, and you paid for it, so why do we owe you that money?" But-

Dave Ghidiu
But, but why ... And, and the tariffs did, uh, come, come as a surprise to a lot of manufacturers. So they had already paid to be like, "Hey, this needs to be shipped here," and then as it was being shipped, the tariffs came in place. So like that was an unexpected, um, cost. Uh, but I do wonder about the downstream effects.

So like let's say that they win, and I don't know that they will. Does this mean that like every purchase I made from Amazon that was affected by a tariff, now Amazon has to go through and figure out how much of each purchase? So I, I, I don't know. But I, I agree, like, um ... And by the way, it couldn't have happened to a nicer company. I actually really like Nintendo. Like, what?

Jeff Kidd
You like Nintendo?

Dave Ghidiu
I think that they are very family forward.I think that their human computer interface has-

Jeff Kidd
Oh

Dave Ghidiu
...always been cutting edge.

Paul Engin
Yes.

Dave Ghidiu
I think that their, um, IP is really, really good.I ...Listen, go after Amazon.Don't go after Nintendo.

Jeff Kidd
Well, okay, so a- as a consumer of Nintendo, um, and you know, like you ...Like, there are streamers out there. There, there, there are-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah

Jeff Kidd
...people that have got, been partnered with, with Nintendo, and like they mod the game or something like that.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
And then they show that. And like, "Oh, look what I did, you know, for the Zelda game.I put all this random stuff there." And then the boom, they're just cut off.

Paul Engin
Yeah. They, they v- are very protective of their IP.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah. It, I get that.I'm protective of my IP.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
It's just like-

Dave Ghidiu
And-

Jeff Kidd
...and they, and they go after people just showing gameplay of stuff.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
Like, you can't show ...You, you can't play g- play our games on live or, you know, stuff like that.Like, it's like, really?

Dave Ghidiu
No, that's fair.

Jeff Kidd
It's free advert- like, they're, it's, they're advertising for you.So I don't know.It's, in some ways they're a monopoly, in other ways-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah

Paul Engin
I, I see both point of v- points of views. Like, their, their usability or their- ... their user interaction when they came up with the Wii controllers was phenomenal.

Even the Switch, the logic of taking it apart and-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah

Paul Engin
...having the controls-

Dave Ghidiu
Right

Paul Engin
... and then putting it back in, and mount- like that little screen can just dock and you get it on the big screen, and you can share. Like, they thought of the user experience more so than I think the ... And I'll say just Xbox and PlaySta- Station-

Dave Ghidiu
Sure

Paul Engin
...have in the past.Um-

Jeff Kidd
They served an, they served a consumer base that had never been served o- otherwise.

Dave Ghidiu
Well, um, yeah, and it goes back, like the Power Pad, the Power Glove, the Virtual Boy, the, the Zapper, the-

Paul Engin
The Game Boy

Dave Ghidiu
...the Game Boy, the um, the Wii, which I think was probably their breakthrough.

Paul Engin
Mm-hmm.

Jeff Kidd
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
Uh, i- it's just like one thing after another. They've just done so many inter...I, I, I love that part of Nintendo.

Jeff Kidd
But you know, I would say m- my feeling about the whole tariff thing is like if you were hurting, then yeah, keep the money. These companies are not hurting.Nintendo's not hurting. They're making-

Dave Ghidiu
Right

Jeff Kidd
...record proference, profits.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
You know, you know, just do, just do the right thing. Be nice.

Just, you know? And, and if they were smart ... Oh my God, I just thought of this. Holy cow. Be like, "Hey, um, w- here's $16 on your Nintendo account."

Dave Ghidiu
Oh, yeah.

Jeff Kidd
So now-

Dave Ghidiu
And then you have to spend another three or four dollars to-

Jeff Kidd
Then you have ... Then you spend that on another ... You spend, you know, $50 on it 'cause now games are $80. So it's like you're actually incentivizing people to spend money back to your own company that way.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.What, what, what's that?

Jeff Kidd
Anyway.

Dave Ghidiu
Nintendo, if you're listening, now you owe Jeff $1 for every transaction- Based on that, uh, paradigm.

Paul Engin
Listen, I bought my Switch 2 at launch, uh, so I did not have to worry about the tariffs.

Dave Ghidiu
Um, I have one, one more piece.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
The, uh...So I typically install the, the web apps of, say, ChatGPT or Gemini or Claude on my computer.

Paul Engin
Mm-hmm.

Dave Ghidiu
Which means you just go to the website and you save the website. It's not the actual app.

But, uh, it has come to my attention that actually if you install the apps specifically for ChatGPT and Gemini, you get more functionality than you would through the web interface. So I'm now installing those apps on my Neo.

Paul Engin
Because in your Chromebook could you install those apps?

Dave Ghidiu
Yes, because Claude has a Linux one and I can install that on-

Paul Engin
Oh.Wait, Claude? But you're...Are you...Oh, you, you're saying Claude or are you saying open-

Dave Ghidiu
I'm saying all three of them.I, I actually don't know if th- ChatGPT has a, a Linux version of it yet.

Paul Engin
Okay.

Dave Ghidiu
Um, but the Gemini, because Google's so web forward, almost all functionality in Gemini is already-

Paul Engin
Web-based.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
Um, so.

Paul Engin
Yeah, and I'll...And, um, with ChatGPT, I was telling you about this earlier, I didn't realize it, so I was using...I've been using the desktop-

Dave Ghidiu
Mm-hmm

Paul Engin
... application for a while, and I kept reading about all these integrations and Codex integrated and this and that. And I'm looking through the interface, I'm like, "I don't know what they're talking about.

I just updated this app- ... and I still don't see it. I don't know what..." And I go and I'm looking at the videos and I, I... Nowhere does it tell you that if you have the old ChatGPT, it's called now ChatGPT Classic.

Dave Ghidiu
Classic.I know.

Paul Engin
And you have to download a new one that's just ChatGPT.

Dave Ghidiu
Th- that's why I don't like the app ecosystem.

Paul Engin
I... And you were even telling me, now I can uninstall Codex. I mean, I just literally installed it this weekend, but, um, now I have the latest ChatGPT desktop. So if you're out there, just be aware that there are two desktop applications. It's a little confusing.

It's ChatGPT Classic, and now it's just ChatGPT.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
So, um, have you had to...Have you used it at all yet or-

Dave Ghidiu
I just downloaded them this morning.

Paul Engin
Okay.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah, I haven't used, uh-

Paul Engin
ChatGPT yet.I've been using Classic.

Dave Ghidiu
I've been stuck on Classic.You...And you saying that just reminded me, I'm doing it right now.

Paul Engin
Downloading-

Dave Ghidiu
I gotta get the re-

Paul Engin
...ChatGPT, the updated, uh-

Dave Ghidiu
Regulated, up- yeah

Paul Engin
... yeah. Um, I don't know why they didn't just update... Oh, I think they... I, I did read somewhere that they did it for, um, companies that have integrated or something the, the Class- the original ChatGPT. Um, 'cause I, I couldn't figure out why they have the Classic. Um, all right, you got an- another one, Dave?

Dave Ghidiu
I, I think I could talk forever, but, uh, I think we're probably running out of time.

Paul Engin
What was the...So you said you put Linux on your Chromebook.I'm totally-

Dave Ghidiu
It, it comes with it.Yeah.

Paul Engin
But it came with that or-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah, it comes with Linux.

Paul Engin
Oh, okay.I thought it was Ch- Chrome OS.

Dave Ghidiu
It is Chrome OS, which is based on a Linux kernel, so... But there's a button. Like, if you go into settings, they're like, "Hey, do you wanna in- do you... If you click this button, you can get a full Linux, um, like the Linux environment." So now, like I can install like GIMP.I've installed, um, all sorts of Linux apps right on my Chromebook.

Paul Engin
Oh, that's helpful.

Jeff Kidd
Without having to like wipe it and like reinstall.

Dave Ghidiu
Nope, there's a button.

Jeff Kidd
Oh.

Dave Ghidiu
That's...So tune in for the episode where I will convince-

Paul Engin
You will-

Dave Ghidiu
...you guys to buy a Chromebook.

Jeff Kidd
Have you...Do you use Linux?Have you ever done Linux?

Paul Engin
Yeah, I do.So with, uh...I used to do Linux a long time ago when it was with Red Hat, and then, uh, with the Spark system, it's all Linux-based.So-

Jeff Kidd
I've never done it.

Dave Ghidiu
So in Linux, like...And, and I just wanna give like manage expectations. When we think of Linux, we're like, "Oh, yeah, it's like all text-based and you have to like go through the-"

Jeff Kidd
No, I didn't think that.

Dave Ghidiu
But it, I mean, I could-

Paul Engin
They have tons of desktops now.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah, like Ubuntu.Ubuntu is like-

Jeff Kidd
Ubuntu, I've heard of that.Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
Like, and I could put that on someone else's computer, and they probably wouldn't even notice the difference between that and Windows.

Jeff Kidd
So what's the point of all the different versions then?

Dave Ghidiu
It, it's open source.Uh, and like Kali Linux comes preloaded with-

Jeff Kidd
It's probably a whole topic, but-

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.So they, you can come with different software bundles. You can have like optimizations, different drivers, stuff like that.

Paul Engin
Yeah.

Jeff Kidd
Interesting.

Paul Engin
And then they can add...And, and like with Red Hat, it was used for bigger servers, so they had a stronger infrastructure base for that stuff and, um-

Jeff Kidd
Okay

Paul Engin
...yeah.

Jeff Kidd
So it's like different operating systems depending on what your needs are.

Paul Engin
I, I almost equate it-

Jeff Kidd
Sort of

Paul Engin
...to Android phones.Like whoever's developing the Android phones comes up with their own flavor of Android.

Dave Ghidiu
Yeah.So the base code is the same, but then there's all slight differences.

Paul Engin
Slight derivatives. So, um, well, that's all the time we have for today. Thanks you again, J- thanks you.

Jeff Kidd
Thanks you.

Dave Ghidiu
Thanks you.

Paul Engin
Yeah, thanks you.

Jeff Kidd
Thanks you.

Dave Ghidiu
Thanks you.

Paul Engin
Yeah. Thank you, Hugh, for, uh, engineering, and thanks again, Jeff, for, uh, coming on.

Um, I think we are gonna do a Chromebook special where, uh, uh, we might have you on again so he can try to sell us on, on Chromebooks. Um, but that's all the time for today, and I am Paul Engen.
